First Contact Large Grade 1 & 2 Agility Final 2010

Well, the last First Contact Grade 1 & 2 Agility Final has taken place. After a lot of discussion, First Contact have decided to move their support, after 6 years, from the grade 1 and 2’s to sponsor a grade 6 qualifier and final

The 2010 First Contact Agility Final took place at the Dog Vegas show in August at the Winterton Showground, Scunthorpe

The prizes on offer - Some lovely glass trophies and a voucher for £100.00 of agility equipment, t-shirts, Rosettes to 10th place and a Rosette for all the unplaced finalists

We were blessed with a dry, but windy evening; fortunately, the ground conditions were perfect for the competition. The crowd gathered to watch the entertainment for the evening, as our judge Gary Wilkes was setting a suitably challenging agility course for the competitors

With the running orders drawn, the course set and Lotta Bowers on the microphone it was time to start the final

First to go was Helen Jones with Vausewood Skip (AW) with an unfortunate 5 faults in a time of 37.712. As it turned out, we had to wait until the fourth dog to run, Philip Bauckham with Jack So Sunny, to set the standard with a lovely clear round in a time of 33.930. Philip would eventually go on to take the third place trophy. We all watched a further eight dogs come and go before we had a challenger for the winning position. Running 13th - unlucky for some, but not for this combination, was Stephanie Shann and Wiccaweys Buddy Marvelous. They had a fantastic clear round in a time of 29.277! Was this going to be the winning round?? The next combination to even come close was Linsey Toon and Sir Barks Alot, running 18th; they had a clear in a time of 31.045. A very good try, but proving that the time was hard to beat. Even with a total of 10 clear rounds, Stephanie and Buddy, managed to hold on to their lead to be the last ever First Contact Grade 1 and 2 winner. Well done to both of you. We look forward to handing you the winning Grade 6 trophy soon.

Out of the 24 dogs that ran, there were 10 clears, 5 with 5 faults, 3 with 10 faults, 1 with 15 faults, and 5 eliminations, demonstrating that the course was well thought out. Well done and thank you to our judge Gary!

Course Plan

The final proved to be a very exciting competition to watch, every partnership was worthy of being there, showing us that the standard of our up and coming handlers and dogs is getting higher each year. Grade 7 people - watch your backs!

It was lovely to see that a large number of the dogs were rescued or re homed and seemed to be enjoying every minute of their new lives together. Especially our winner - another lucky dog from the popular Wiccaweys Rescue Centre. The winner from last year was also from Wiccaweys - Wiccaweys Dancing Brave.

Congratulations to Stephanie and Wiccaweys Buddy Marvelous

Well done and thank you to all the competitors who provided us with a thrilling and entertaining final, to the clubs that hosted the qualifiers, and the judges and ring parties throughout the year, Gary Wilkes for judging the final, Lotta Bowers for commentating and thank you to Dog Vegas for hosting the final We look forward to seeing the grade 6 dogs and handlers providing an equally exciting final next year

Dog Vegas Grade 3, 4 & 5 Small/Medium Final
Supported by Showoffs Rosettes

The time had come at last for me to report on a final from a competitor’s angle instead of watching from the sidelines.

After struggling to get back to fitness after an injury 2 years ago, I somehow, managed to qualify my little medium dog Copper, for the Dog Vegas small/medium 3-5 combined final. After that one qualifying round at Easter, the poor little dog never managed another training session or competition until we walked onto the final ring at the Dog Vegas show in August! Not much chance of us winning the lovely crystal clock that was the first place trophy. There were 21 competitors booked in to run - I was running order 13!!

We all walked the course which was set by our judge, Heather Mitchell - thank you Heather for stepping in at the last minute. Gill Blanchard was due to judge this final for us, but must have decided at the last minute that she wanted to compete in it - as that weekend, she managed to qualify herself! Well done Gill!

It was a lovely flowing course that was set. There were a couple of little traps at the beginning that created a couple of eliminations. Dogs going from jump 1 to number 4 (the tunnel) and jump 1 to back jump number 3. There was a lovely little teaser near the end with the tunnel under the dog walk - causing a couple of dogs to lose some time on the way to the finish, while they waited for the handlers to catch up.

Course Plan

We ended up with 5 faults, when my little boy completely missed the dog walk, because I was so intent on getting to the other end I must have just pulled him of it - definitely a case of great dog - shame about the handler!

I feel that overall the course ran really well and was a very fair test to dogs and handlers. It was a great final, with a lovely atmosphere - thank you to the crowd for your support.

Congratulations to everyone on getting there, especially to the top three places, a couple of rising stars here.

1st Nicola Roe Odds On Deefa Do C 38.813 - A Sheltie, not yet two years old – fantastic!

2nd Peter Ray Nujax Ice Danger C 40.550 - A Miniature Schnauzer - again, two years old in September - well done!

3rd Sharon Sampson Cogshals Odyssey 5 35.476 - What a cracking time for this little spaniel - especially as it is her first season competing - definitely another one to watch out for next year

Thank you to Jackie Kenny and the rest of the Dog Vegas team for organising and sponsoring the final. Thank you to Cheryl at Show Offs Rosettes for sponsoring the heats and proving us with some top quality rosettes. Thank you to all of the shows that held the heats and to Kathryn for judging the final. Thank you to www.memoriesinpictures.co.uk for supplying the photographs.

We look forward to doing it all again in the 2011 final - for information on the heats and final for 2011, contact Jackie jaxk9@tiscali.co.uk

Large Agility Combined 3, 4, 5 (Sponsored by Pawstrading) Results 2009

Grade 3, 4 & 5 Final 2009

Yet another year of agility passes us by, already the second Dog Vegas final has come around. It doesn't feel like 2 years have gone by since we agreed to organise and sponsor the first Large Grade 3, 4 & 5 Agility series. Last year was such a success, that we decided to organise and sponsor a competition for small and medium dogs as well. To be able to do this, we needed some additional support.

This year the large 3-5 heats were kindly sponsored by Paws Trading - a pet supplies business, who many of you will know from attending numerous agility shows. For more information on Paws Trading, please check out their website www.pawstrading.co.uk or ring Paula on 01773 832758.

The small/medium heats were supported by Show Offs rosettes – a local manufacturer of quality rosettes and trophies, who supply all of the rosettes we use for our Dog Vegas shows. For more information on Show Offs, please contact Cheryl on (tbc).

The Finals took place at the Dog Vegas show on Saturday 29th August 2009 at the Winterton Showground, Scunthorpe.

There was a real buzz in the air as there were money prizes on offer to 5th place for the large dogs and 2 nd place for the small/medium dogs - Some lovely ‘diamond' trophies and vouchers for future Dog Vegas shows, placing rosettes and also a rosette for all unplaced finalists.

We were blessed with a good weather for the evening, and perfect ground conditions for the competition. The crowd gathered to watch the evening's entertainment as the judge Linda Hutchinson was setting a suitably challenging agility course for the 62 competitors.

With the running orders drawn, the course set, the wine flowing and Lotta Bowers on the microphone it was time to start the small/medium final.

First to go for the mediums was Emma Rouse and Colstongorse Basil with an elimination. Second to go was Michelle Sturge and Ruby Golden Twist, producing a steady clear in a time of 47.128. Third to run was Leanne Szostak and Return of The Kim, also going clear and sneaking into the lead with a time of 42.562. This little dog appears to be destined to do agility, having been born alongside international show jumpers at John Whitakers' yard in South Yorkshire. Fourth to go was one of our very own ‘chef's', in her first final - Stella Parker and Lady Lilly AW. Unfortunately for Stella, Breeze picked up 5 faults - not bad though for a dog that has had a hip replacement!

Fifth on the line was Anne Holt and Maybe Moss, Anne says this little Jack Russell loves running and jumping – they managed to jump into the lead with a lovely clear round in a time of 37.354. With another 21 dogs to follow, could they hold onto this lead? The next clear, was running order number seven, Carol Ellis and Our Connie, they managed a time of 39.045 to eventually take fifth place. After a mixed bag of faults and eliminations, Julie Rumsey was the next to pose a threat to Anne's lead with her little rescue dog from Ireland. Gertie ran a clear in a time of 38.127 to go into second place. The only other person to come close to Anne's time was Ruth Grint, running 24th with yet another little rescue dog, Woodside Houdini. They managed to slip into second place, winning the £25 prize money, with a time of 38.029, letting Anne retain her lead and go on to win the £75 prize money and ‘diamond' trophy. Well done!

Then it was time to start the large final.

First to go was Sue Roberts, a teacher from Worcester with Bright Stars U Kan Goo Roo. Unfortunately, Sue had a refusal to come away with 5 faults in a time of 39.231. Next to go was Kim Watts with Canen Cerys with an unfortunate elimination. Third up was Kevin Lampitt with Cheesy Wotsit, a Kelpie x Collie. This pair qualified last September at Dashin' Dogs, since then they have made it up to Grade 6 and we can see why, they did a fantastic round, clear in a blistering time of 32.053! A high standard had been set from the start. Was this going to be the winning round? Two more clears were soon to follow for Liz Hutchinson with Dalesman Joe and Dave Deaville with Midwinter Rush and Roulette with times 32.583 and 37.038 respectively. Linda's time was close enough for Kevin to loose a few finger nails! Running order number seven, Pat Holiday with Darleyfalls Fiasco made a very good effort of taking pole position by smashing Kevin's time by almost 3 seconds, but ended with 5 faults. With another amazing time 28.997, was Ian Jackson with Darleyfalls at Midnight , but again picking up 5 faults. After numerous faults and eliminations, we had to wait until running order 21 to get the next clear round, this was Caroline Key and her working sheepdog Safn-y-Coed Cai. Cai is a true working sheepdog as she does this as her day job, agility for this dog, is a hobby. So the time of 34.393 was a good try, but only good enough for an eventual 5th place. Following Caroline to the line was Alison Naylor and Major Sweep. This pair, from Hereford, have attended 2 other ‘novice' finals, so would having that experience help with the nerves after being eliminated with her other dog? It seems so as they managed a very good clear round in a time of 32.469 - four tenths of a second behind Kevin. The pressure was staring to build as we were nearing the end of the competition. We new the time could be beaten, but could it be beaten with a clear round? Next to last to run was Janet Thompson with Comebyandaway Totalli Diva. Even though this is Tali's first season competing, with the Comebyandaway prefix, we knew this was a pair to watch, it was obvious that Janet meant business from the start; with a faultless clear round in a time of 32.392, she didn't disappoint us. Unfortunately for Janet, just was just outside Kevin's time by 3 tenths of a second, to put her into second place. I think by this time, Kevin must have bitten all of his nails. He didn't have to wait much longer though as there was only one pair left to run - Jayne Pettitt and Wiccaweys Dancing Brave - a veteran of finals at this show as she won the First Contact final last year! Would they be good enough to take the £100.00 cash and first place trophy? It seems not - Kevin managed to retain his lead and walked away with the £100.00 cheque, first place trophy, free entry for his dog at a future Dog Vegas show and a lovely rosette. Well done!

Out of the 36 large dogs that ran, there were 6 clears, 11 with 5 faults, 2 with 10 faults, 1with 15 faults, and 16 eliminations!

Out of the 26 small/medium dogs, there were 9 clears, 3 with 5 faults, 1 with 15 faults and 13 eliminations.

This Final proved to be a very exciting competition to watch, every partnership was worthy of being there.

It is very rewarding for us to be able to put something back into agility, it makes all of the hard work worth while when we see how much these dogs enjoy their job, especially as a lot of the dogs were rescued or re-homed. It is great to see the pride on the owners faces of what they have achieved with their dogs.

Congratulations to Ann Holt and Maybe Moss on winning the first small/medium Show Offs Dog Vegas final.

Congratulations also to Kevin Lampitt and Cheesy Wotsit on winning the second Large Paws Trading Dog Vegas final.

Well done and thank you to all the competitors who provided us with a thrilling and entertaining final, to Paws Trading and Show Offs rosettes for sponsoring the heats, to the clubs that hosted the qualifiers, and the judges and ring parties throughout the year, Linda Hutchinson for judging both finals, Lotta Bowers for commentating and thank you to the Dog Vegas team for organising and hosting the final. We look forward to another successful competition next year.
